The Spirit of Gluttony

Cal Pierce

I want to follow up on my article that was published in our last newsletter and posted on The Elijah List in October. It was titled, The Kingdom Health Care System. I have never written an article that has had such a large response.

One of the emails I received struck a chord with me that points to why we need to become a healthy body. It was from a couple who are missionaries and expressed that they are overweight, have problems with energy and being able to get around as much as they need to. They said that this impedes their ability to fulfill the call God has on their lives.

This is so true, when we are overweight and unhealthy it affects every area of our life and ministry. In America today it is said that two out of three people are overweight and one-third of all adults are obese. I believe that an overweight condition, which weakens our immune system, is a major root to sickness and disease. Our health officials are telling us there is a pandemic of obesity in our nation.

It's interesting to note that the word pandemic comes from the word pandemonium, which means utter chaos. It also refers to the abode of all the demons. (Webster's Dictionary) Notice the spelling: pan-demon-ium. The enemy desires to release a spirit of gluttony that causes an overweight condition that weakens our immunity to sickness and disease. A spirit of gluttony comes to produce failure in our life. It's a controlling spirit that comes through desire. We then desire food, especially sweets. Desire produces craving; craving is great desire. When the spirit of gluttony controls us, we become addicted. We want to hang on to what we are addicted to. Then, we have a problem being delivered from what we are hanging onto.

We try to break the spirit of gluttony with diets and exercises to lose weight. We try everything and still experience failure. We feel worse than when we started. The problem we don't realize is that diet and exercise does not deliver us from a spirit. We must set our mind in the right place. In Romans 8:6 it says, "For the mind set on the flesh is death (failure) but the mind set on the Holy Spirit is life and peace (victory). Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can you submit your mind to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you. (James 4:7) The spirit of gluttony cannot control you if God is able to control you. God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you would always have all sufficiency in everything, and then you will have an abundance for every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8). We must remember that though we walk in the flesh, we do not war in the flesh because our weapons are divinely powerful for the destruction that gluttony brings. (2 Corinthians 10:3)

When my wife and I began to break the spirit of gluttony in our own lives, I first thought I don't know if I want to do this! Then the Holy Spirit reminded me that I was not my own, I was bought with a price. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body."

I finally realized that my body isn't mine, it belongs to Jesus. He purchased it with His blood and that blood covers me. I am now His body, filled and occupied by His Spirit. Because of this, I now have a mandate to glorify Him in my body. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 the word body means to do well and the word glorify means to honor as a representative or ambassador. I realized that God has an interest in me. I am His body and His Spirit dwells inside of me to bring the power that allows me to overcome gluttony. The Holy Spirit wants His temple to be healthy and strong. He wants to partner with me for the fulfillment of God's will on the earth through my life. In Colossians 1:13 He tells me, "For He delivered me from the domain of darkness (gluttony) and transferred me to the Kingdom of His beloved Son..." This isn't something He is going to do, He already has done it. I am not only delivered from gluttony, but I am delivered into Kingdom victory by the power of God that now is in me!

God wants you to know no matter what you are struggling with that in Him you can do all things. With us it's impossible, but with Him all things are possible. In Ephesians 1:19 He tells us He has a surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe. This is the power of God to be more than a conqueror through Him who loves us. (Romans 8:37)
