Treasure Hunting, by Linda Foster

Jesus commissioned us to go and make disciples of all the NATIONS. It starts with one person at a time. We call it "Treasure Hunting" because we are hunting for His Ultimate Treasure people. Mark 16:15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation." Luke 19:10 "for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."

When we think of witnessing we may think of the homeless, addicts, and 3rd world countries. The truth is He wants business people, movie stars, stay home moms, pawn shop owners, teenagers, everyone. So the question is, how do I introduce Jesus to others?

I think I speak for most of us when I say, "I'm too scared to talk to a stranger about Jesus. I don't know what to say." Even though I have taken the classes, read the books, and listened/taken notes on what other people did, I still feel like a salesperson, which I am not. So I have had a fear of rejection which has kept me from living the great commission. I even resolved that I did not have the "gift of evangelism." Then I came to Healing Rooms School of Transformation and I realized I was not fully living the destiny that the Lord had set before me.

One of the most practical (and scary) tools while Treasure Hunting is "words of knowledge." Ananias is a good biblical example of this. Acts 9:10-12 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord." And the Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight." As you can see, Ananias was listening and obeyed the word of knowledge. Matt 7:7 says, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." We simply just trust the Lord to speak, while seeking His heart .

Here are just a few of our personal encounters with Treasure Hunting. Our clues were "JoAnne's Fabric", "lady with dark curly hair", "black jacket and boots" and "prayer for adult children." So we started with JoAnne's Fabrics and we found her. We told her we were on a Treasure Hunt and we believed she was our treasure because she fit our clues. When she saw our list she cried and turned to her teenage granddaughter and said, "Heaven came down and the Lord sent angels to pray for me."

Another student had this experience, "I saw a picture of a left ear in the morning during worship. When we went out on our Treasure Hunt a boy was walking toward us with his friend. We asked if he needed prayer for his ear and the boy freaked out. He did have pain in his ear but he turned away from us. Just as quickly he turned back and the pain left his ear before we could even pray for him!"

A student got the name "Rick", another got "Pawn Shop", and another got "coffee shop/game store." There happened to be a corner in town that had all three of these together. So we started toward the pawn shop. We didn't see anybody who seemed "highlighted", so we just walked in to ask the four guys who were working if anyone needed prayer for anything. Their response was that everything was fine. Then the phone rang. The one who answered said, "This is Rick." As soon as he got off the phone we showed him that his name was on our list. He turned a little pale and said, "I'm fine thanks." That day we didn't get to pray "with" him but we did pray "for" him and he may have an encounter with the Lord later. He can't deny, God was after him that day.

Another time a student heard "lady with red jacket." They ended up at a hospital and when they entered the elevator the lady with the red jacket was in it! They told her what they were doing and she broke down and accepted prayer because she was there for her husband who was diagnosed with cancer. The team prayed peace into her and healing for her husband. She was very receptive.

How we organize what we hear is by using a map that is broken down into five sections: location, name, appearance, what type of prayer, and we even have a category called "unusual". From Acts 9:10-12, God gave Ananias a location, a name, and what Saul needed prayer for.

We begin by asking God, "Who do you want to talk to today?" then we listen. Sometimes you'll hear things like, "broken heart", or "Rachael" or "meaning of life", or you'll see things like the image of a person (appearance) or butterflies (could be location or unusual). Listening is the key.

Writing down the first thing that comes to mind is important. You must trust that the Lord speaks to you and that you hear His voice. (John 10:27).

If we wait for people to come into our churches before we will reach out, we might be waiting a long time. Jesus told us to "Go" not wait. People have reasons for not going to church but that doesn't stop God from going after them. He allows us to partner with Him on His great adventure. When we speak to people we don't want to talk to their thinking, we want to speak into their heart. We don't want them just to see God's love, we want them to experience God's love. The best way to learn about treasure hunting is just to go out and do it. I learn something every time. And remember, you are not alone.

Matt 28:18-20, And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen
