A Victim or Victorious Mindset

In the Message, Psalms 42:11 says...Why are you down in the dumps, dear soul? Why are you crying the blues? Fix my eyes on God - soon I'll be praising again. He puts a smile on my face. He's my God.

The writer is saying that when he takes his eyes off of his troubles and fixes them on God it changes his attitude. A number of years ago I volunteered to help my husband cut and collect firework. I did a lot of grumbling, but the short version is - I hadn't eaten, it was hot, I got stung by a wasp. Could things get any worse?

Once we had all the logs on the road, Jim rolled them towards the trailer before he cut them into manageable lengths. My job was to stop them before they hit the trailer. I got tired and bored of lifting my foot to stop each one and thought it would be a good idea to just lift my toes off the ground to stop them. Well, I neglected to consider the velocity at which the log would roll towards me or its weight. As it hit my foot the log rolled up my foot bending my toes backwards. I thought I had broken three toes. Now I was really in a wonderful mood; hungry, thirsty, hot, in pain from the wasp and limping from my almost broken toes. As I threw the wood into the trailer, my back and shoulders became painful as well. Something had to change.

A thought crossed my mind. Praise God. So I did, through clenched teeth, praise God. Over and over again; praise God, till soon my attitude changed. I had taken my eyes off me and put them on God. He fills us with joy and according to the second half of Nehemiah 8:10 it is the joy of the Lord that is our strength.

This is our choice. What do we want to be our focus? Do we want to be a victim of our circumstances, allowing them to have power over us or do we want to be victorious? As long as we focus our eyes and hearts on Jesus we will be victors. As I write this a verse from a song goes through my mind...we shall overcome some day. Why do we have to wait till someday to overcome? Why not now? Make today a new day of victorious thinking.
