The Plumb Line

Thomas Benson

The prophet Zechariah and his contemporary, Haggai, were used by God to arouse the people to rebuild the temple after their exile. Zechariah is one of the most messianic of the Old Testament prophets. In Zechariah  4:6-10 we find that Zerubbabel, who was the governor of Judah at the time, has been commissioned by God to oversee the temple’s construction and that it will not be accomplished by might nor by power but by the Spirit of the living God. In verse 9 we see that the foundation has been laid and in verse 10 we read, “For these seven rejoice to see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel, they are the eyes of the Lord, which scan to and fro throughout the whole earth.”

A plumb-bob, or plumb-line, is a weight, usually with a pointed tip on the bottom, that is suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line, or plumb-line. I believe that one of the things that the Lord is saying to us today in this portion of scripture is that the spirit of Zerubbabel is coming upon the church to apply the plumb line; to see if our lives and what we are building in His name is in exact vertical alignment with His kingdom purposes. That plumb line will be applied to every individual life as well as every church congregation to see if we have heeded the warning in 1 Cor 3:10, “But let everyone take heed how he builds on it.”

It is imperative that we allow Holy Spirit to have full sway in every area of our lives so that we can build correctly on the foundation that has been laid by His Holy Apostles and Prophets, Jesus Christ being the chief cornerstone.

The seven eyes referenced to above are the seven Spirits of God that are watching over the building process. There is a church that is even now rising out of the rubble of religion. This is the church that Jesus died for and they are coming from every tribe and nation, every race and every false religion and cult. They are becoming the church that the gates of hell will not prevail against.

So be greatly encouraged, vigilant and continue to pray, we are about to see things that have never been seen before. The world is about to see a church that they have never seen before.
